Getting Started

This part is always tricky. How do I start a piece of writing which is supposed to help you get on with your writing? I suppose I could tell you to stop wasting your precious time reading blogs. But if you're like me you'll need more motivation to start writing than available time. Even after sacrificing less important activities, like sleeping, to sit in front of the computer, still the temptation to do other things can easily steal the time back. What I need to get me started with my writing each time is an easily achievable goal. Once I start writing and the goal approaches, the temptations fade away, and the hard part is past - getting started.

I have found the Wrekin Writers to be an wonderful source of motivation. The group are very supportive of every achievement. The one-hundred word chair's challenge gives me the easily achievable goal I often need each month to get me started. Because I have to write to a subject and by a deadline - this is perfect motivation for me. You can find the latest chair's challenge on the Wrekin Writers website: www.wrekinwriters.co.uk so why not give it a try yourself.

I often wonder if writing competitions are so popular because they give a goal for poorly motivated writers like me to work to. The Wrekin Writers also run a yearly writing contest called the 'Doris Gooderson Short Story Competition'. This contest is due to launch again in April 2009 and you'll need to write just 1200 words on any subject that inspires you. Why not give it a go. Come on, get started!

Best Regards
